Zombie parkour classic ‘Dying Light’ celebrates ten-year anniversary with huge update

The developers behind Dying Light have celebrated the zombie parkour’s tenth-anniversary with a huge update.

Dying Light was originally released in 2015 with a sequel Dying Light 2: Stay Human following in 2022. Dying Light: The Beast is due to launch later this year but before that, developers have launched a huge update for the original.

The “Retouched” version of Dying Light features a number of improvements to the graphics with higher resolution textures, upscaled skyboxes & clouds and “ultra”-level quality shadows. A “fully remastered” soundtrack from the game’s original composer Paweł Błaszczak is also included in the free update, alongside new tracks and ambient themes.

“The Retouched update is about squeezing out even more from the Dying Light you already love. It’s not a complete overhaul or remaster,” explained game director Tymon Smektala in a development blog. “A lot of you have been asking in the last few months about the Retouched update – where it was, why it was taking so long. The honest answer is this: We were working with 10+ year old technology.

“Even with all the new experience we’ve gained over the years, figuring out how to apply those learnings to the original Dying Light engine while keeping everything stable was a challenge.And let me tell you, it was a massive amount of manual work.”

“One of the best things about working with your own engine is that the people building it are just next door,” added technical director Grzegorz Świstowski. “Over the past couple of years, we’ve added a lot, customised a lot, and learned how to squeeze more from the tech we already have. One day, someone just started applying those learnings to some old assets – and it just clicked that we could do that across the whole game.”

“We also made it a top priority not to change the game’s system requirements. You can’t just crank up the details and hope it still works on everyone’s system,” he continued. “It was a delicate balancing act, but we cracked it. And now? It’s finally ready!”

The Dying Light retouched update is available for free for all PC, Xbox and PlayStation users.

Dying Light 3: The Beast will launch August 22. “You are Kyle Crane and after years of being experimented on, you are out for revenge,” reads the game’s description. “Experience a unique blend of open world and action survival horror as you hunt down the man who turned you into half man, half beast.”

In other news, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has teased the possibility of orchestral tours following the success of the Nintendo Music app.
