“Welcome to Doechii’s school of hip-hop, are you ready to have a good time?” the Swamp Princess asks the packed West Holts stage, emerging from a larger-than-life DJ deck and surrounded by an entourage of backing dancers. Fittingly, the stage is laid out as a classroom, and the breakout rap star is here to make good on her promise.
Aged just 26, the artist has been vocal in kneeling at the altar of rap greats including Lauryn Hill, Kendrick Lamar, and MF Doom, and when she takes to the stage for her elaborate set, it’s clear that she’s adopted the best traits of all three. Tracks like ‘NISSAN ALTIMA’ and ‘CATFISH’ showcase her unrivalled skills in wordplay and vigour, while softer additions like ‘Anxiety’ see her switch to timeless, satin vocals with ease.

There is stiff competition around the time of her set, clashing with Charli XCX’s highly-anticipated ‘Brat spectacular over at the Other Stage. But with her immaculate choreography, crystal-clear bars, and attention to detail, there is no question that the Florida star can hold her own. From the charisma with which she interacts with the crowd to the tongue-in-cheek nod towards her controversial umbrella-incident at the Met Gala, it’s almost hard to believe that this is an artist who only had her first major mixtape last year.
Shortly after creating a rave vibe with ‘GTFO’, she takes things one step further in reminding her audience that the secret to excelling in hip-hop comes from mastering the “art of storytelling”. Cue a swift outfit change and a clip of her acting in what seems to be a vintage horror film, before she delivers an unforgettable rendition of ‘DENIAL IS A RIVER’ to close out the set.
This may not be the typical Glastonbury set full to the brim with special guests but in just 45 minutes, the Tampa star showcases what she does best and why she’s one of rap’s brightest lights. Consider us schooled.
