Lalo Schifrin, composer of ‘Mission: Impossible’ theme & more, dead at 93

Lalo Schifrin, the film and television composer who is best known for the Mission: Impossible theme, died on Thursday from complications with pneumonia. He was 93.

While Mission: Impossible might be his most famous work — he won two Grammys for it in 1968 — Schifrin’s CV is deep and wide. On the film side, he composed the score for Enter the Dragon, Cool Hand Luke, Bullitt, Dirty Harry, THX 1138, The Amityville Horror, Rush Hour, and more. His TV themes include The Man for U.N.C.L.E., Mannix, Planet of the Apes, and Starsky and Hutch.

His jazzy, groovy scores were also ripe for sampling, and among songs that have borrowed from Schifrin include Portishead‘s “Sour Times,” De La Soul’s “Oooh,” Cypress Hill‘s “Stoned in the Way of the Walk,” Big Pun’s “100%,” N.W.A.‘s “Approach to Danger,” Scarface (with Dr. Dre and Ice Cube)’s “Game Over,” and The Go! Team‘s “The Power is On.”
