A Kyuss reunion is “possible”, says Josh Homme

Josh Homme is seemingly open to the idea of Kyuss reuniting – see what he had to say below.

Homme, along with vocalist John Garcia, bassist Nick Oliveri and drummer Brant Bjork, formed the stone rock band in 1987 and disbanded in 1995. In the years since, Homme has gone on to form Queens Of The Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, Eagles of Death Metal and more.

Following several years of failed attempts at reconciliation, it appears that Homme is now open to the idea of a Kyuss reunion, judging from his chat with fan channel Kyuss World earlier this week.

“I know I thought about it many times… I think about it. I’ve actually talked about it a few times to people that help me do stuff,” Homme told Kyuss World’s Nathan Lawver. “I just feel like the punctuation of Kyuss – it was such a perfect little unit, and it ended the way it should.”

The Queens Of The Stone Age frontman went on to briefly address his 2012 lawsuit against his former bandmates and the Kyuss Lives! spin-off: “I was totally in support of what was happening in Kyuss Lives! and things like that. It was just there were some tricky things that were pulled… I think it’s good for people to know what happened.”

He continued: “But it always left me with a strange feeling, because it’s like, you wanna set things right. And plus I just don’t think it’s good… There’s no reason to hold on to anything negative. I don’t have negative feelings about anybody. None of that stuff matters. So, yeah, it’s possible.”

A reformation of the band took place in 2011 under the Kyuss Lives! moniker without Homme.

In 2012, Homme filed a lawsuit Kyuss Lives!, after initially meeting with his former bandmates, saying at the time: “It sucks. To think we went to a meeting in January solely to help them with their request to continue Kyuss Lives! With open arms, we made every attempt to help them continue Kyuss Lives! respectfully. Only to discover that while they looked us in the eye, the Kyuss Lives! management and band had filed federal documents in 2011 in an attempt to steal the name Kyuss.”

A judge later ruled that year that Bjork and vocalist John Garcia were not permitted to release any recordings under the name Kyuss Lives! and warned them that future concerts under the Kyuss Lives! mark “might continue to subject them to liability for trademark infringement”.

In 2021, Bjork said he had reached out to Homme to try to mend their relationship: “As far as a Kyuss reunion happening, that was my attempt at not necessarily getting the band back together but at the very least developing some communication with Josh.”

“And it seemed at first that it might be time and [we] actually [might] be able to connect. But it didn’t happen. That was months and months and months ago, so it’s clear that it’s not gonna move forward. And who knows? Maybe he puts Kyuss together and puts his own version together or whatever. I don’t know what he’s gonna do. We’ll have to just see.”

In 2020, Homme hinted at a potential reunion: “There have been times I thought it cannot end that way, and the only real way to end it correctly now would be to play. And because they sort of perverted the punctuation and they knocked the wing off this beautiful dragon that’s an ice sculpture, and the only way to put the motherfucking wing back on would be to [play again].”

As for QOTSA, the band are currently playing a run of shows across the US, before they head back over the pond to headline two huge outdoor gigs at Sheffield’s Rock N Roll Circus this summer.

They will be also topping the bill at festivals including VictoriousØyaElectric Castle, Lowlands, Pukkelpop and Rock En Seine this summer, as well as embarking on a European headline tourVisit here for remaining UK tickets and here for international tickets.

They’ve also announced details of a North American tour, inspired by their one-night-only event at The Catacombs in Paris. The gig was later released as a concert film, and in August will be released as limited edition vinyl.
