Will Lionel Messi feature in the FIFA World Cup 2026? Argentina teammate breaks silence with six-word hint

As the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues, speculation is mounting over whether Lionel Messi will don Argentina’s colors for one last tournament.

As the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues, speculation is mounting over whether Lionel Messi will don Argentina’s colors for one last tournament. After securing the Copa America in 2024 and achieving World Cup glory in 2022, the legendary forward’s future with the national team remains cloaked in uncertainty. Now, a trusted Argentina veteran has weighed in with a bold statement — and it may provide the clearest hint yet.

Messi, now 38 and currently playing for Inter Miami, has not closed the door on a return to the World Cup stage. His form remains electric: 10 goals and 6 assists in 13 MLS matches earned him Player of the Month honors in May, proving that even in the twilight of his career, Messi continues to redefine what longevity means in soccer

Although the Argentine icon has asked for patience about his decision, his performance at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup — where Inter Miami are set to face PSG — shows he remains physically and mentally invested in top-level competition.

“The truth is that when you start thinking about it, it’s a long time away but at the same time it’s going to pass quickly, no?” the Argentine mused earlier this year. “For me this year is going to be important, to be able to play with continuity, to feel good.”

What did Otamendi say?

Amid all the swirling uncertainty, Nicolas Otamendi, one of Messi’s most experienced national teammates, has now delivered a stirring endorsement of the captain’s potential return to the World Cup. “Obviously, as the World Cup gets closer, he will make his decision,” Otamendi told Radio La Red. “But I don’t see Leo [Messi] missing out on the World Cup. Leo is Leo, the best player in soccer history.”

Otamendi, currently with Benfica, didn’t stop there. He elaborated on Messi’s mindset and competitive spirit: “Right now, he’s living in the moment. He’s enjoying the Club World Cup. Leo’s focus is on continuing to compete, taking it month by month and seeing how he feels. He will make his decision based on how he feels physically, but you will never take away Leo’s desire to compete, to be there, to help the team. Helping Argentina is in his DNA. Leo is different.”

Argentina’s road to 2026 — With or without Messi

Argentina has already secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup, set to take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. As reigning champions, expectations are sky-high — and Messi’s presence could tip the balance in their favor once again.

Yet the road to the tournament hasn’t been without challenges. The veteran has faced recurring muscular injuries in recent months, prompting debates about his long-term fitness. At the same time, head coach Lionel Scaloni has started building a more diversified team, emphasizing that the Albiceleste must be able to perform even without their talisman.
