Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan will reunite in a new entry in the popular series The Trip, this time taking the comedy duo to Scandinavia.

The show began back in 2010 with The Trip, where fictionalised versions of the actors travel across Northern England. It was directed by Michael Winterbottom and warmly received, winning Coogan a BAFTA for his performance in 2011.

Three further series followed – The Trip To Italy in 2014, The Trip To Spain in 2017, and The Trip To Greece in 2020. Last year, Winterbottom told NME there would be “no more trips” despite Coogan’s enthusiasm to continue. In February, however, it was revealed there would be a return thanks to legal documents filed when Coogan was caught speeding.

Now, broadcaster Sky have confirmed that The Trip To The Northern Lights will be the fifth series of the beloved comedy. A press release stated: “More than five years since their Grecian escapades, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon reunite for The Trip to the Northern Lights — the eagerly awaited fifth instalment of the multi-award-winning, critically acclaimed Sky Original comedy series”.

“Directed once again by renowned British director Michael Winterbottom (This England, 24 Hour Party People), the new six-part series sees the pair trade Mediterranean sunshine for the rugged beauty of Northern Europe. What follows is a gloriously daft and delicious journey — this time through Scandinavia — in search of fine food, wry conversation and a glimpse of the elusive Northern Lights”.

In the release, Coogan said: “I’m delighted that Michael Winterbottom has managed to persuade me at the age of 59 to join Rob, aged 60, to squeeze the last few drops of comedy from a bottle that we both thought was pretty much empty”.

Rob Brydon added: “I’m so pleased to be heading out on a Trip once again, this time to beautiful Scandinavia and how lovely to do it while Steve Coogan, Michael Winterbottom and I still have most of our faculties”.

Production has begun on the show, with a broadcast date yet to be announced.
As well as making a new show with Brydon, Steve Coogan will also be bringing back his iconic character Alan Patridge for a new series. During an interview in January, he revealed the story will focus on the “mental health of the nation”.
