NYC’s Guerilla Toss have announced a new album, You’re Weird Now, which will be out September 12 via Sub Pop. It was produced by Stephen Malkmus and recorded at The Barn, the Vermont studio owned by Phish‘s Trey Anastasio. Behind the boards as engineers were regular Malkmus collaborator Bryce Goggin and frequent Phish knob-twiddler Ben Collette. Both Malkmus and Anastasio are also on the album.
“His incredibly relatable down to earth approach to music and trusting yourself as an artist had a massive effect on this album and myself as a musician,” says frontwoman Kassie Carlson. “Working with Malkmus, Bryce Goggin, Trey Anastasio, touring with Primus—all of that made me realize that what I’m doing is not wrong. The work is clear, important, and necessary. It’s not always easy or clear in direction or purpose, but creating, making, performing music is vital to my life, and a healthy earth.”
The album features recent single “Psychosis Is Just a Number,” and the new single is “Red Flag to Angry Bull,” which has a strong ’90s indie rock sway-along vibe and features Malkmus on backup vocals and a very Phishy guitar solo from Trey. If you’ve been following the careers of Malkmus and Anastasio, a collaboration seemed inevitable, but who would’ve thought it would finally happen on a Guerilla Toss song? Watch the very trippy animated video below.
Guerilla Toss will also be on tour for You’re Weird Now starting September 12 at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts (home of the original Woodstock) and including an NYC show at Brooklyn Bowl on October 16. All dates are listed below.
