Beyoncé has wrapped up her mammoth run of ‘Cowboy Carter’ shows at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London by giving thanks to Paul McCartney in a social media post – check it out below.
Following the sixth and final show of her London concerts last night (June 16), Beyoncé took to Instagram to thank Sir Paul McCartney for “writing one of the best songs ever made’ in The Beatles‘ ‘Blackbird’, which she covered on ‘Cowboy Carter’.
She continued, pointing out that she had worn an outfit designed by Macca’s daughter Stella: “Every time I sing it I feel so honored. And it is a full circle moment to wear your beautiful daughter’s design.”
In the post, Beyoncé shared images of herself rocking a white t-shirt that was adorned with two black birds, and included the song’s title on her left hip. Check out the full post below.
Beyoncé performed ‘Blackbird’ on all six nights of her London stint, with the track sitting as the second song of the setlist. Her cover of the Beatles classic featured the band’s original master recording backing track.
Bey’s own spin on the song sees it renamed as ‘Blackbiird’ – making a nod to the album’s ‘Act II’ theme. The original track was written solely by McCartney in 1968 for The Beatles’ self-titled double-LP, aka ‘The White Album’. The finished product is also credited to John Lennon, although was written and recorded entirely by McCartney.
The Beatles’ ‘Blackbird’ was originally written in response to the US civil rights movement, and title also makes a nod to the British slang “bird” for “girl”, and McCartney last year praised Beyoncé’s cover for “easing racial tension”.

“I am so happy with @beyonce’s version of my song ‘Blackbird’. I think she does a magnificent version of it and it reinforces the civil rights message that inspired me to write the song in the first place,” Macca wrote. “I think Beyoncé has done a fab version and would urge anyone who has not heard it yet to check it out. You are going to love it!”
“I spoke to her on FaceTime and she thanked me for writing it and letting her do it. I told her the pleasure was all mine and I thought she had done a killer version of the song. When I saw the footage on the television in the early 60s of the black girls being turned away from school, I found it shocking and I can’t believe that still in these days there are places where this kind of thing is happening right now. Anything my song and Beyoncé’s fabulous version can do to ease racial tension would be a great thing and makes me very proud.”
Nick Levine wrote of Beyoncé’s first ‘Cowboy Carter’ show in London in a glowing five-star review for NME: “As a performer, she remains pretty much flawless – who else can sing from a bucking mechanical bull without missing a note? And as a creator of stadium spectacle, she keeps getting better. No one leaving this show will be removing their cowboy hat on the ride home.”
