So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
ÁSGEIR – “FERRIS WHEEL”
Icelandic singer-songwriter Ásgeir will release new album Julia on February 13 via One Little Independent. “Julia is about losing my way, and the struggle to find it again. When I was deciding on a name for the album, this shapeshifting figure stood out as some kind of throughline for the songs,” Ásgeir says. “Julia is the namesake fictional character of one of the LP’s songs, but she also takes on different forms throughout the record: an inner voice, a guiding motherly voice, a ghost, sometimes even an ex-girlfriend.”

HANNAH FRANCES – “LIFE’S WORK”
Nested in Tangles, Hannah Frances’ new album, is out next month, and the new single is the beautifully orchestrated “Life’s Work,” which she calls “a haywire and whimsical exploration of familial rupture and the impacts of growing up in a dysfunctional home. Featuring arrangements by Daniel Rossen and trombone by Andy Clausen, there’s a touch of theatrical gallows humor to this song as a musical juxtaposition to the interiority of pain that I am narrating. Learning to trust in spite of everything is our life’s work.”

HELADO NEGRO – “MORE”
After a few records on 4AD, Helado Negro has signed with Ninja Tune imprint Big Dada and announced his first release for the label, The Last Sound on Earth EP that will be out November 7. “When I wake up in the morning, I can listen to my ears tuning-in to the world around me,” Helado Negro’s Roberto Carlos Lange. “It feels like a blanket being pulled off my eardrums. I was watching Michael Snow’s – Wavelength (in increments ) while working on these songs and the room for interpretation of what I saw and heard felt large. Every time I watched it carved a new emotion out of me. Despair, hope and inspiration. I wanted to ask more of listeners, to want to take time — not just pause, but ask yourself can you untangle all of the mess and try again”

COURTNEY MARIE ANDREWS – “CONS AND CLOWNS”
Courtney Marie Andrews is back with her first new music in three years. “‘Cons & Clowns’ is an ode to all the artists, outsiders, and shy loved ones you want to see shine!,” she says. “In this world of growing sameness I wanted to write a love letter of encouragement to anyone who was afraid to be their wildest and weirdest self, especially amid the dark landscape of now. With a desire to embody the unencumbered playfulness of youth, I played the flute on this track, an instrument I haven’t played since my childhood.”

FLOCK OF DIMES – “DEFEAT”
“This song represents a moment of total surrender,” Flock of Dimes, aka Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner, says of the latest single off her new album The Life You Save. “It’s about the moment I finally allowed myself to accept my own powerlessness, and started the process of learning how to step back and allow others to face the consequences of their actions. It features a moment of melodic counterpoint that became a sort of mantra for myself as I attempted to make my way through this process—I’m inside it, after all. This realization—kindly first introduced to me by someone I love who sees me clearly—was something of a breakthrough for me. Learning to see myself as a part of a dynamic (rather than separate, having escaped) was an important step in changing my own behavior—which is, ultimately, the only real agent of change over which I have any sort of control. Three years after I wrote it, the work continues—I am still working on trying to see myself not as some kind of savior figure, but just another flawed human being, doing her best.”

ODONIS ODONIS – “HIJACKED”
Canadian industrial-leaning duo Odonis Odonis have announced their new self-titled album that will be out November 15 via Royal Mountain. “Hijacked” is about the tension of a world on the brink,” they say about the album’s first single. “It reflects on a pivotal moment for humanity—a warning against surrendering to destructive, regressive forces. It channels the feeling of being stalked by a looming darkness that’s always just behind us, but the message is clear: the future is still unwritten, but only if we refuse to be hijacked by fear and chaos.”

KEATON HENSON – “INSOMNIA”
Keaton Henson announced his ninth album, Parader, due out on November 21 via Play It Again Sam. He’s given us a preview with “Insomnia,” about which he says, “I’m singing about the fact that I can’t sleep from my bedroom in wild rural Sussex, looking out over the fields, but then it’s like there’s suddenly a 7-Eleven in the middle of the field, old memories invading my present.”

DUENDITA – “BASSLINE” & “BIG ONE”
“My dear friend and collaborator Noah Becker made these beats, and we loved performing them live in harmony, so we decided to record all of our vocals on the track — Emily Akpan and Vanessa Camacho are featured vocalists,” duendita says of their new singles. “We’ve been performing together for the past 7 years, so finally collaborating in the studio was so special. I went to the club 5 nights in a row, saw the sun rise every single morning, then wrote ‘big one.’ These tracks are made with a lot of love from my family and I to yours!”

IMMERSION (mems WIRE) – “PUSH THE ROCK”
Immersion, the duo of Wire’s Colin Newman and Minimal Compact’s Malka Spigel, will release new album WTF?? on September 26 via swim~. They say new single “Push the Rock” is “about surviving in this messy world, we push the rock because we have no choice. The quote ‘You are the sky, everything else is just the weather’ (by Tibetan Buddhist nun and author Pema Chödrön) is simply a way to remind that we also need to look beyond the moment. In short It’s about life innit.. :).”

JOSEPH – “READY TO LET YOU DOWN”
Joseph, the indie pop duo of sisters Natalie and Meegan Closner, announced a new album, Closer to Happy, due out January 30 via Nettwerk. About new single “Ready to Let You Down,” Natalie says, “‘Ready To Let You Down’ is about learning to stop abandoning myself in order to make other people comfortable. I’ve spent most of my life trying to earn love by being what others needed — but that only led to burnout, depression, and disconnection. ‘Ready To Let You Down’ is a turning point — it’s me reclaiming my energy and allowing myself to be imperfect, even if that means disappointing someone else.”

PEEL DREAM MAGAZINE – “VENUS IN NADIR”
Peel Dream Magazine are back with Taurus, which they’re calling a companion to last year’s Rose Reading Room. Joe Stevens seems to have morphed the project’s sound again, this time favoring jangly guitars and drony organ, at least on this first single. This is a song that I started during the Rose Main Reading Room sessions but kind of gave up on. I revisited it after the album came out, reworked the lyrics and some of the overdubs, and ended up with this really simple twee song about a forlorn recluse who is withering away from an requited love. I imagined him confined to a log cabin, withdrawing from the civilized world, maybe because the guitar voicings felt very Nick Drake-y. “Venus In Nadir” is what came out and it seemed right. I was already kicking around this astrology motif, which is mysterious to me because I’m highly skeptical of it. But that’s what’s cool about writing songs – you can take these mental images off the shelf, make a mess of them, and you don’t have to worry about putting them back when you’re done.” The album’s out October 1 via Topshelf.
